Black River

The community of Black River is located on the Lake Huron shore at the mouth of Black River in northeastern Alcona County. A community park and boat launch are located at the mouth of the river for boating and fishing enthusiasts. Negwegon State Park is located on the north edge of town offers several miles of beautiful beaches and hiking trails.

The settlement was named from the stream flowing through it into Lake Huron. A fishing station, first occupied by William Cullings in 1849. Settled by French trappers and fishermen, it is still French. Seat of the lumbering operations of Alger, Smith & Company (A. A. Alger, M. S. Smith), 1876-1880 (then the largest pine timber producers in the world). It is now a fishing village again. Edgar O. Cheney became its first postmaster on February 9, 1877, the spelling was changed to Blackriver on May 16, 1894, and then back to Black River in 1958.
