Houghton Lake

Houghton Lake is located in southwestern Roscommon County, on the southern shore of Houghton Lake, Michigan’s largest lake, .Houghton Lake is a shallow, marshy lake, with a maximum depth of 30 feet and is the origin of the Muskegon River. The lake was named for Michigan’s first state geologist, Douglas Houghton, who explored the area in 1852. The community developed around the sawmill established by S. C. Hall in 1873. Boating and fishing on Houghton Lake is excellent. Numerous campgrounds, motels, resorts and restaurants provide accommodations to tourists visiting the area. Population: 6,300 (includes Houghton Lake, Houghton Lake and Prudenville).
