Ossineke

Ossineke is located on US-23 in Alpena County between Alpena and Harrisville. Situated near Devils Lake and Thunder Bay it offer excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation. In 1844, Jonathan Burch and Anson Eldred made the first government land purchase here at the mouth of the Devil River (named by the Indians, not because it was a bad river, but because it kept bad company, flowing between two large swamps).

David O. Oliver, who had surveyed the area in 1840, bought the mill property of Mr. Burtch in 1847. In 1848, Lee R. Sanborn bought much of Mr. Oliver's land, and platted and recorded the village.

George B. Melville became its first postmaster on February 13, 1867. A station on the Detroit & Mackinaw Railroad. The Indian name for the site was Wawsineke, which the was changed to Ossineke, by settlers.
